How to Tunisian Crochet Bamboo Stitch with Vickie Howell

Multiples of 3 + 2

Row 1: 

Forward Pass:  *Yo, [TSS (insert hook through next verticle bar, yo, pull up a loop)] 3 times, pass the yo over next 3 loops; rep from * to end, insert hook into end stitch and pull up loop. 

Backward Pass: Ch 1, *yo, pull through 2 loops; rep from * to last 2 loops, join B with yo and pull through 2 loops.

Row 2: 

Forward Pass: *Yo, [insert hook through next verticle bar, yo, pull up a loop] 3 times, pass the yo over next 3 loops; rep from * to end, insert hook into end stitch and pull up loop. –

Backward Pass: Ch 1, *yo, pull through 2 loops; rep from * to last 2 loops, join B with yo and pull through 2 loops.

Repeat Rows 1-2, until piece is desired length.

MATERIALS

Vickie Howell Montoya Merino Light (100% superwash merino; 300 yds/100 gr), in colors A) Leche and B) Roswell –or equivalent sport-weight yarn

Size US H/8 mm Vickie Howell Aqua Wooden Adjustable Tunisian Crochet Hook — or equivalent hook

Tapestry needle

Fabric

Handful of stuffing

Sewing thread and needle or sewing machine

FINISHED SIZE

Approx 4’/10 cm square

 

DIRECTIONS

Tunisian Crochet Squares (Make 2)

With A, ch 17.

Set-Up Row:

Forward Pass: Beginning with the 2nd loop from the hook, pick up a loop in each chain. –17 loops

Backward Pass: Ch 1, *yo, pull through 2 loops; rep from * to end. — 1 loop rem.

Row 1: 

Forward Pass: With A, *yo, [TSS] 3 times, pass the yo over next 3 loops; rep from * to end, insert hook into end stitch and pull up loop. — 17 loops.

Backward Pass: Ch 1, *yo, pull through 2 loops; rep from * to last 2 loops, join B with yo and pull through 2 loops — 1 loop rem.

Row 2: 

Forward Pass: With B, *yo, [TSS] 3 times, pass the yo over next 3 loops; rep from * to end, insert hook into end stitch and pull up loop. — 17 loops.

Backward Pass: Ch 1, *yo, pull through 2 loops; rep from * to last 2 loops, change to A with yo and pull through 2 loops — 1 loop rem.

Repeat Rows 1-2, until piece is square, and ending with A.

Tunisian Bind-off.

 

Fabric Cushion Center

  • Cut 2 pieces of fabric, 1/2″ larger than your finished crocheted square.
  • With RS facing and using 1/4″ seam allowance, sew 2 pieces together, leaving a 2″ opening.
  • Flip piece RS out. Press, if necessary.
  • Insert stuffiing.
  • Hand sew opening shut.

FINISHING

With WS together, and using B, join yarn and sc the two sides and bottom of the crocheted pieces together, taking care to work 2 sc at corners. Insert cushion, sc top closed. 

Weave in ends.
