This week on the show is the founder of Handstand Kitchen, Yvette Garfield. Handstand Kitchen is a kid-focused cooking company that encourages delving into the different cultures of food as a child learns to make, eat and enjoy those foods.

Vickie met Yvette on an airplane a decade ago. She was on her way to Austin, where Vickie lives, to do a cooking class event for kids at the Whole Foods culinary center. Vickie brought her then 7-year-old son Tristan to take the class, and have since been watching Yvette business grow and thrive.

During their conversation, Yvette and I talk about growing up in Southern California, her decision to leave her career as a lawyer to start her own business, the challenges and triumphs of being a female entrepreneur, and why kids and their relationship to food is her passion. Listen now!

After graduating from law school and working in children’s rights, Yvette wanted to combine her passions for working with kids and cooking. She launched Handstand Kitchen in 2007 with the goal of getting kids cooking from an early age to empower them with lifelong healthy eating habits. She encourages all little chefs to use their cooking skills to give back to their community.
