Lavender Lace Eye Pillow: How-to Make it!
MATERIALS
1 hank (makes several) Vickie Howell Montoya Merino Light (100% Superwash Merino; 300 yds), in color: Aura — or equivalent sport-weight yarn
Size US 5/3.75 knitting needles — or size needed to obtain gauge
2, 8 ½” x 4 ½” pieces of medium weight fabric (I used quilters cotton)
Sewing needle and thread
Tapestry needle
Optional: Sewing Machine
Approx 1 ½ cups of plain rice
Lavender Essential Oil
Sewing pins or claw clips
Blocking supplies
GAUGE
22 sts x 24 rows = 4″/10 cm in Lace Stitch, after blocking
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
4″ x 8″
DIRECTIONS
KNIT PILLOW SLEEVE:
FRONT
CO 22 sts.
Row 1 (RS): P5, *k2, yo, ssk, p4; rep from * to last st, p1.
Row 2 (WS): K5, *p2, yo, p2tog, k4; rep from * to last st, k1.
Rows 3-8: Rep Rows 1-2.
Row 9: P1, *k2, yo, ssk, p4; rep from * to last 5 sts, k2, yo, ssk, p1.
Row 10: K1, *p2, yo, p2tog, k4; rep from * to last 5 sts, p2, yo, p2tog, k1.
Rows 11-16: Rep Rows 9-10.
Repeat Rows 1-16, two times MORE.
Repeat Rows 1-8, once more.
BO in pattern stitch.
BACK
CO 22 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Purl.
Row 2 (WS): Knit.
Repeat Rows 1-2 until piece measures 8″/20 cm.
BO.
Block both pieces.
PREPARE PILLOW FILLING
- Place rice in a bowl.
- Add essential oil (approximately 8-10 drops), stir into rice.
- Set aside
Note: Lavender oil can be strong, so start slowly. You can always add more!
MAKE PILLOW
- With RS facing and using a ¼”/1 cm seam allowance, machine or hand sew 2 pieces together leaving an opening for turning.
- Trim corners and seems as necessary.
- Turn piece right-side out.
- Fill pillow with rice mixture.
- Using needle and thread, sew the opening closed.
FINISHING
With WS facing and using tapestry needle and yarn, seam three edges of the FRONT and BACK sleeve pieces together.
Insert pillow into the sleeve; seam closed.
Weave in tails.
