“VH: We have to figure out how to get people to place value on [craft design in the print world]. You know as well as I do that rates for designers working with magazines haven’t really gone up since the 80’s. This is especially true for knitwear publications. It’s crazy. I mean, some garments take 40, 60 or even 80 hours of work, and then they’re bought for pennies on the dollar. That’s another challenge we’re dealing with [in the industry] right now.

CBL: Yes, but I think it’s great that if the same nameless, faceless knitwear designer creates a successful blog, Etsy shop, or Flickr page and markets herself, there’s an opportunity to create her own persona. You have to set your value high. If that’s your calling card, then you can come back to whoever’s trying to under-price you and say, ‘No, I’ve got my own community of readers, and this is what I’m worth.’ It goes both ways. It’s easy to say there isn’t enough value placed on small business and individual artists, but at the same time, the individual has to create his or her value.“
