“VH: You got a masters from the Fashion Institute of Technology; you have a background in design; and in your book Big Ass Book of Crafts you cover the gamut of crafty genres. Is there one craft, though, that speaks more to you creatively than others?

MM: No, there really isn’t. I thin that as creative people, we keep exploring whatever it is that pulls our gown down for the time being. For a long time, I felt very pinned down as a fashion designer because my only medium was fabric. It was great, and I think I made my mark in fashion doing different things with fabric because I had an artistic background–I’d make dresses out of canvas that I’d painted on, things like that. So when I finally busted out of fashion, it felt like, ‘Wow, I’ve done this, and it’s time to do other things.’ I never wanted to be pinned down to anything, and I still don’t.”
