“VH: Your Hispanic heritage seems to play a big role in some of the non-craft related projects you take on. Do culture and craft also mix for you?
JG: Absolutely. You know what it is, Vickie; I think it’s similar to a discussion I just recently had. I spoke at this lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender event the other night, and this girl came up to me afterwards who count’s have been more than 18 or 19 years old. She’s a young lesbian woman who is not able to talk to her family about it–she’s Chicana–it’s a whole cultural thing. And she was asking me sort of the same thing: Do I feel my politics seep into everything that I do? And the answer is yes. I feel like your culture, your politics, who you are–it flavors everything you do.
I’m incapable of making Porterhouse steak; mine’s always going to be carne asada. I can learn, but I think whether you’re talking about politics or crafting–you’re culture, what you value, and what you know are all embedded in who you are, and therefore, reflected in what you do.”

I would love to get this book for my daughter. She loves making (and wearing) jewelry, and we don’t have access to the DIY TV anymore. We used to enjoy watching Jackie Guerra’s show, and I know she would appreciate having this book.
