This week on Ask Me Monday we’re digging into our stash to make unique, modern Scrap Bin Stockings for Christmas. Using scraps leftover from projects past, either as they come or double or triple stranded, each stocking’s stripes tell a story. They’re chunky, colorful, customizable and can be knit in an evening. Make one for all of your loved ones! You choose whether or not to subject them to tales of what you originally made using the yarn for each, individual stripe. š

Scrap Bin Stockings Pattern
MATERIALS
Knitter’s Pride Size US 13/9 mm Dreamz Needles OR Size Required for the THICKEST yarn you choose (I love my Ginger Needles!
Several different colors, textures and weights of yarn scraps from your stash. To get the size stocking shown, use at least some super chunky yarns.
Large Tapestry Needle
Knitter’s Pride Waves Crochet Hook (optional for hanging loop)
FINISHED SIZE
Approx. 7 1ā2” /19 cm x 39″/99 cm
Project size may vary based on scrap yarns used.
DIRECTIONS
Note: This project is worked flat, then seamed up.
Leg:
With first color, CO 30 sts.
Rows 1, 3 & 5: *K1tbl, p1; rep from * to end.
Rows 2, 4 & 6: *p1tbl, p1; rep from * to end.
From here, you’ll cut the yarn just used and join a new color every 4 rows, or as often as you choose.
Rows 7 & 9: K all sts.
Rows 8 & 10: P all sts.
Rows 11-50: Repeat Rows 7-10, changing yarns every four rows.
Heel: The heel is worked with a series of short-rows as follows.
Row 1: K all sts.
Row 2: P all sts.
Begin shaping.
Row 3 (RS): K20, yf, sl 1, yb, sl st back to LH needle. Turn. (Youāll leave the remaining sts
unworked.)
Row 4: P9, yb, sl 1, yf, sl st back to LH needle. Turn.
Row 5: K8, yf, sl 1, yb, sl st back to LH needle. Turn.
Row 6: P7, yb, sl 1, yf, sl st back to LH needle. Turn.
Row 7: K6, yf, sl 1, yb, sl st back to LH needle. Turn.
Row 8: P5, yb, sl 1, yf, sl st back to LH needle. Turn.
Row 9: K6, yf, sl 1, yb, sl st back to LH needle. Turn.
Row 10: P7, yb, sl 1, yf, sl st back to LH needle. Turn.
Row 11: K8, yf, sl 1, yb, sl st back to LH needle. Turn.
Row 12: P9, yb, sl 1, yf, sl st back to LH needle. Turn. Shaping finished.
Row 13: K9, k2tog (closes gap), k to end.
Row 14: P18, p2tog (closes gap), p to end. –28 sts.
Foot:
Resume yarn striping pattern.
Rows 1 &3: With A, k all sts.
Row 2 & 4: P all sts.
Repeat Rows 1-4, four times total.
Toe:
Row 1: K5, ssk, k2tog, k10, ssk, k2tog, k to end. — 24 sts.
Row 2: P all sts.
Row 3: K4, ssk, k2tog, k8, ssk, k2tog, k to end. — 20 sts.
Row 4: P all sts.
Row 5: K3, ssk, k2tog, k6, ssk, k2tog, k to end. — 16 sts.
Row 6: P all sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a really long tail for seaming. Feed tail through live sts; let fall off of needles and
cinch shut.
FINISHING
Using tapestry needle and yarn tail, seam up stocking side.
Make loop: Using a crochet hook and yarn crochet a chain, or simply braid yarn without a hook, make a 2ā/5cm loop and attach to top-back of stocking cuff.
Weave in ends.

when you are knitting flat., can you use straight needles? because I see that you are using circulars… I used straight and now I’m ready to do the heel., do I need to switch to circular.. I’m a novice so thats the reason for the questions… ty..

Yes, absolutely! I just prefer circulars because they’re easier on the wrists. You don’t ever need them, though for this project. š
THIS. IS. GORGEOUS!!! Love the idea of using scraps to create something new. š Thanks so much for the idea and video. Was wondering if you remember what the yarn is that has the bits of hot pink and yellow in it in your video sample – – doesn’t quite look variegated but it probably is. Would love to hunt it down for a project!

Yes – ordered some – thanks! I love this look so much – – but unfortunately don’t do stockings. Instead I’m trying to replicate it in a scarf! I bought some of the Spun Right Round, because I love that tiny pop of pink – – and actually had to purchase some neutrals. I love the wonky look of this stocking and at this point will probably just stick with a CO of 30 and a K P repeat but it seems kind of boring. I’m wondering what Vickie Howell would do! Can you tell me how you might convert this stocking into a scarf? What stitch would you use?
