This week Vickie reconnected with an amazing woman she met at a Vogue Knitting Live conference where she was the keynote speaker. Siedah Garrett is most publicly well known as the co-writer of the song Man in the Mirror (sung by the iconic, Michael Jackson), the Grammy Award Winning & Oscar Nominated writer of “Love You I Do” from the movie Dream Girls, and as the back up singer for frankly, too many of the vocal greats to list here.
What the masses may not know about her, though is that she’s also an amazing knitting and crochet designer. During their conversation, we talked about how she got started as a singer, which legendary producer pushed her to song write, her childhood introduction to knitting and crochet, and about her utter enjoyment over making statement pieces for celebrities like Madonna.
While Siedah Garrett is widely known for co-writing Michael Jackson‘s “Man in the Mirror”, this GRAMMY Award winning and two-time Oscar nominated singer/songwriter has created a body of work that spans three decades, and includes collaborations with some of the most iconic names in entertainment. A Quincy Jones discovery, Siedah has written songs recorded by the likes of Jackson, Jones, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Earth Wind & Fire, Sergio Mendes, Toto, Sheena Easton, Natalie Cole, Barry White, Pointer Sisters, Donna Summer, Dionne Warwick, Patti Austin, Roberta Flack, Al Jarreau, will.i.am and Jamie Foxx. As a featured vocalist, she has toured internationally with Jackson, Jones, Mendes, Madonna, Wang Chung, Brand New Heavies, and former Temptations member Dennis Edwards, whose duet with Garrett, “Don’t Look Any Further”, became a classic R&B hit single. Garrett also dueted with MJ on his #1 single, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”.
Siedah Garrett has been very active writing music for film, television, and special events. This includes “Love You, I Do” by Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls, for which she won a GRAMMY and scored her first Academy Award nomination, and “Real In Rio” from the animated film Rio, which garnered her second Oscar nomination. She also co-wrote and performed the official theme songs for the 2007 and 2015 Special Olympics World Games, and the 2010 World Expo.
Garrett makes regular guest speaker appearances at educational institutions, charities, and music industry conferences, to share her experience and advice. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences – Music Branch/Executive Committee, and is a rotating member of the Board of Governors of the Recording Academy’s Los Angeles Chapter. She has served as in-studio vocal producer for American Idol, and maintains a 20-year side career as a voiceover talent for Toyota of Southern California. She currently resides in Los Angeles, and is married to former RCA Records VP/A&R, Erik Nuri, who also works as her talent manager.
