Bernat Cotton-ish by Vickie Howell: In Stores this Week!
I’m so excited to announce that it’s finally time to “officially” announce the latest, co-branded yarn in my line: Bernat Cotton-ish by Vickie Howell! Beginning this week (anytime between now and 5/11), you’ll be able to find it on encaps (that shelving on the end of the aisle) at select, Jo-ann Stores and on Joann.com.
Bernat Cotton-ish by Vickie Howell (just Cotton-ish, for short), is a lightweight, 55% cotton/45% acrylic blend with a tight twist to give it a sproing-y hand. It’s lovely, airy drape is perfect for a variety of items including baby layette, toddler clothing, women’s tops, lacy shawls, summer beanies, cafe curtains and placemats.
Cotton-ish comes in the rich, saturated colors that are signature to my modern-meets-retro-chic aesthetic. While creating this line, I took to heart the frequent requests I get from mom stitchers who are sick of traditional pastels for babies. Whether you’re making something for infant, adult or home, the palette of this line speaks to the trend of mixing bold color with cool neutrals. Each color was hand-picked by me — using everything from fabric to found objects as inspiration — and named after something cotton-related (you know how I love a theme!)
Gauge & Washing Info
If you’re a fan of my other yarn, Sheep(ish) but prefer not to work with wool during the warmer months, then Cotton-ish is for you! Throughout the Spring and Summer keep your eyes open for new, season-appropriate patterns, blog giveaways, Pinterest galleries, a crochet-along, and more!
In the meantime, here’s a look at the free patterns that come on the yarn ball labels.
Free pattern on the yarn label: Tri-Light Kerchief Shown in color: Cotton Gin
Free pattern on the yarn label: Sweet & Simple Sundress
Shown in color: Cotton Harvest
Free pattern on the yarn label: Mai Tie Shown in colors: Cotton Field & Grey T-shirt
Free pattern on the yarn label: Market Bag Shown in color: Lemon Twill
To find a store near you that carries Vickie Howell for Bernat yarns, check out my store locator app.
Are you a LYS owner who will be carrying Cotton-ish in your store? Post your info so I can add the shop to the finder list!
Psst! I haven’t seen it in stores, yet. First three people to snap a picture of the Cotton-ish display (or a selfie of you in front of it) from your local Jo-ann or indie store, get a free bag (3 balls) of Cotton-ish! Just post a link in the comments section of this blog or share a photo on my Facebook wall!
Hi Vickie. I saw it tonight at my Joann’s and want to try it. I would love to do the market bag but skeins had either the bowtie, dress, or kercheif and the endcap was full. And of course I didn’t take a picture !!!! So where can I find the pattern for the market bag? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you !!!
Hi there! The Bernat folks are working away to get the label patterns (and more!) up on their site by end of day. I’ll also get them up in my shop on Ravelry as I can. Thanks for your patience! 🙂
Thanks Vickie, I found then on Bernat’s website. I am so excited to try something with this yarn. I am more of a knitter than crocheter but I just might have to learn so I can make that market bag. Thanks again for the info.

Vickie I think there is an error in row 3 of your “Tri-Light Knit Cowl”. Row 3: K1,yo,knit to marked st yo k1 yo. After this yo, I have no more stitches???? Can you tell me what I am doing wrong. Does the first loop count as a stitch? Counting the first loop and cast on 2 stitches. Or do I not count the loop and cast on 3 stitches. I tried it both ways and come up short. Please help.
Thanks.

I am devastated by the loss of @hillcountryweavers founder, Susanne Middlebrooks.
I wrote a longer tribute to her on my blog and Facebook (links in bio). In short, though, she had been sick for a long time but had been a master at not letting the illness get in the way of her living. So, it was often unimaginable that she wouldn't be with us for longer. Last June during an industry convention in Chicago when Susanne came over to the bar booth I was sitting at and plopped herself next to me to chat, I had no idea that it would be the last time I'd get to see her. I'm so thankful though, that when we parted ways to go back to our respective meetings, it was with a hug. Rest in purls, my friend....
When I came across this Knitting Needle Patent greeting card by @patentpress , I couldn’t resist selecting it as one of the items for the YarnYAY! September box! (Link in @vickiehowell bio or got to YarnYAY.com)
What looks like part circular knitting needle, part Tunisian crochet hook is illustrated as the patent drawing for flexible knitting needles. This greeting card memorializes the creation of tools that we stitchers can now, not do without!...
The sample yarn for both palettes of this year’s 12 Days of YAY! Advent Box have arrived. I cannot wait for stitchers to open up a new color everyday!
I don’t want to spoil the shade surprises, but I can share just how much yarn we’re sending you this year — FIFTEEN mini hanks of beautifully hand dyed yarn, by two rad boss-lady dyers.
Historically, we have sold out of these so I’d you’re prone to FOMO, be sure to pre-order tour 12 Days of YAY!
Nineteen years into this knitting career, it’s crazy-pants that I’ve never had Learn to Knit or Learn to Crochet kits before. So, I finally made it happen. If you know someone, or ARE someone that wants to learn — while also making something wearable— check out our new hats and scarves kits in the YarnYAY! Shop!
Cant wait to try your cotton yarn.
