Two Ways to Close-off Beanies Without Shaping

Two Ways to Close Beanies

This week on ๐—”๐˜€๐—ธ ๐— ๐—ฒ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜†, I show two ways to close-off a knit or crocheted beanie that cleverly alleviate the need for shaping. These techniques are used in the Rever and Racer hats featured in the Septemberber YarnYAY! box, but can be applied to most beanie patterns, with some minor changes. The coolest part? These methods work on any tube-shaped piece, transforming them into a hat!

Happy beanie seaming!

Close Beanie: Pinch to Cinch Method

SEWN VERSION

With wrong-side of hat facing, at top of hat bring center front and center back of beanie together. Using tail and tapestry. needle, insert hook through center front and center back (joining front and back at center). Pinch side edges to the same center point and whip stitch the edges together. The top of the beanie will now be in a star formation. Continue to pinch opposite edges and stitch them together until top of beanie is completely closed.

CROCHET VERSION

With wrong-side of hat facing, at top of hat bring center front and center back of beanie together. Join yarn with single crochet (sc), inserting hook through center front and center back (joining front and back at center). Work the rest as for SEWN VERSION, replacing whip stitches for single crochet stitches.

Close Beanie: Paper Bag Method

KNIT VERSION

Turn the hat inside out, making sure that the yarn is on the outside. Fold the cable of the needle so that the first. half of the stitches are on one side, and the next half of the stitches on the other. Pull out a loop of cable between the two halves.

Using a spare needle, work 3-needle bind off.

Cut yarn leaving a tail, and securely sew the corners together.

Close Beanie, Paper Bag Method.

SEWN VERSION

Work same as for KNIT VERSION, using long-tail, mattress, and tapestry needle, instead of 3-needle bind-off.
