Dollar Bin Bag Hack

Yarn Shown: Cotton-ish in colors, Cotton Candy and Cotton Harvest & Simply Soft In Neon Yellow.

I love adding little handmade touches to existing items, especially when I don’t have time to make something from scratch myself. Canvas totes and zippy bags make great canvases for these details, and offer an affordable way to quickly add your own flair to something that’s been mass produced. Recently, I came across some sweet, doodle-printed accessory bags. At the time, I wasn’t sure what I’d use them for however, they came in handy when I wanted a little something for the ladies I work with on the set of Knitting Daily TV! I used different yarns, in different colors for each bag (only a few shown here), and played around with different edgings. This project was fun and quick, but meaningful. Just how I like ’em!

Supplies
Canvas Zippy Bag (I found mine in the dollar bin at my local, discount store)
Coordinating Embory Floss & Needle
Sport or Worsted-Weight Yarn
Size G (4.5 mm) or H (5mm) Crochet Hook

Optional:
Message Stamp & Stamp Pad (no special ink required)

How-To:

Optional Step: Hand stamp a logo, message or graphic onto bag front.

(Neon Edging Version)

Using measuring tape, mark dots  1/2″ apart and 1/4″ down from zipper’s edge on front size of bag.

With tapestry needle, embroidery floss and using markings as a guide, Blanket Stitch evenly across. The horizontal portion of the stitch creates a loop, and for  this edging you’ll want an even number + 1.

1st Row: Join yarn by pulling loop through top of 1st blanket stitch. Ch 3, sc in next st, *ch 2, sc; rep from * to end. Turn.

2nd Row: Ch 3, *dc in ch-2 sp, 3 dc around the post of dc just made (makes 3 dc group), sc in next ch-2 sp; rep from * ending with sc in same ch-2 sp as last 3 dc group.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.
