I got into crafting after my aunt from San Fransisco came to visit. She introduced me to this crafting movement, and showed me sites like Makezine, Craftzine, Threadbanger, and other stuff like that. She told me that crafts were not gender-specific. So I did all these crafts and I really like to make stuff. It’s my passion, besides writing. So I really liked this website that shows other crafters around the world.

I learned to knit with my mom. I have Asperger’s Syndrome and knitting makes me feel less anxious and more happy.

When I was 9 years old my taught me how to make felted people. I was really excited because it was really fun and I was really good at it. Then one day I got tired of making only people so I decided to think of something else. I started bending the pipe cleaners – at first I tried to make a bunny but then its tail was too big and it looked like a shark. Then it reminded me of fish so I made a mermaid. The first mermaid I ever made was actually fat but then as I made more and more I got better at it. Then one day my mom told me about a farmer’s market so I decided to make a lot of mermaids and have my own booth. It was really fun because for their display I used actual sand and I made them sit down on cute rocks. A lot of people stopped and admired the mermaids and it made me feel happy. I asked mom to make me a website. We spent so long trying to choose a name. We even looked through the dictionary. Eventually we found a name that was just right. It was ‘Earthsessions with Sofi”. TH: It is drawing and coloring.

VH: How did you feel when you were in your Clay Creations class last summer?

TH: Happy. It was fun.

VH: What about when you made your sock monkey?

TH: Fun.

VH: Do you like that you and I both are crafty?

TH: Uh huh, yeah.

VH: Why?

TH: It’s fun to be with you and it’s fun that we’re both crafty, so we can make stuff together.

VH: I agree.

Do you have a happy memory about one of the times you’ve been creative?

TH: Yes. I drawed [sic] a dog that I really like.

VH: How’d that make you feel?

TH: Happy. I like how it looked.

VH: Were you proud of yourself?

TH: Yes. I was in kindergarden. It was a very long time ago. I don’t have that picture anymore.
