When I was around 12 years old, my parents came home one sunny afternoon from the local flea market with a jar of beads and findings that they had purchased from a retired jeweler. This jar was quite a treasure, brimming with vintage Czech and Japanese glass, lampwork beads, gemstones, old buttons and unusual metal findings…
I spent the following days and weeks sorting through my loot and making earrings to sell at school for snack money. Looking back now, I realize how valuable some of those beads were and feel some remorse over parting with them for Little Debbies and Nutty Buddies.
Still, some pieces from that incredible jar have remained in my possession and of course my collection of beads has since grown. In fact, I’ve taken my beads with me on all my travels. They’re a constant companion so that I can make jewelry wherever I go. It’s funny to think how my enduring addiction to and love for beading is all because another artist’s destashed goods ended up in my hands!
