All my life I wanted to be an artist.  I grew up in a home filled with amazing art; pottery, paintings, macramé and handmade clothing.  What really kicked it into gear for me was when, at age 6, my mother bought me a bag of beads from a garage sale.  They were so shiny and detailed… some of American Indian origin, some handcrafted, Venetian glass, African, vintage crystal.  I would string them over and over until one by one they would roll away and hide under the furniture, seemingly gone forever.  Even in my childhood carelessness I was clever enough to save a small handful of those beads.  I still run across one of the collection on occasion, now tucked safely into a bead organizer I keep in my studio.

But a larger gift than the beads was my mother’s gift of creativity and “Do it yourself” gumption.  I have always just felt the best items were those you’ve made yourself.  Be it your curtains, a card, a bracelet, or back in the day; a clay ashtray (even when your Grandma never smoked).  Sometimes I hoard more than I use.  The pack-rat in me (a not-so-positive gift from my mother) loves to sort through endless boxes of pretty paper, ribbon scraps and stickers.  But to surround myself with the art of craft and all its trappings is my legacy.  These supplies and unfinished projects are appendages of the whole me.
