My earliest memories of wanting to be artistic and crafty stem from visits to my grandmother in Guatemala…. She had the greatest place for a kid b/c she had rabbits and chickens running in her yard (even though she didn’t live in the country) had a huge avocado and mandarin tree I would try to  climb and a neat bamboo “forest” where I would go search for eggs and the rabbit named Chicky.  While I roamed the yard chasing the rabbits and following the baby chicks my grandmother had a room where she would paint and another where she would sew me fun matching outfits.   Sometimes I would sit in there and watch her and have random conversations as any 4 year old might…and when she wasn’t looking I would go into her painting room and add embellishments of pink to her trees…. In my mind I envisioned a gorgeous pink forest… Somehow the brush would not cooperate.

One day I went in there to sneak another splash of pink and I found next to her canvas a smaller easel and canvas…. Just for me.  I immediately got to work and realized that my trees looked like telephone poles and no amount of pink would remedy it.   After realizing that my skills did not match my imagination I spent a lot of time harassing my grandmother to teach me how to draw… I would ask her to draw me all the animals I could think of and I would watch the movements and sequence of shapes until I learned how to draw them exactly like her.

I spent much of my life learning as much as I could from my grandmother… From cooking to sewing to painting.  I have to say had I not been around such a creative person in my life I would not have been so inspired and determined. My hands still stumble in translating what my minds eye sees but it is so much fun to learn the process and extremely satisfying when my creations match my imagination.
