Being a step-parent has to be the most difficult and sometimes the most unappreciated job in the world.  I should know – not only did I marry the first time a man with two teenage daughters, but I turned around the second time to marry a man with four sons (in addition to a daughter and son of my own)!  My two children appreciate all that I do for them, but it can be very hurtful when all you do for step-children barely gets a thank you. But the one time I always get a thank you and a loving hug is when I knit or crochet them something, i.e. scarves, hats, afghans.  Then they realize that I spent my time to make them something because I care and love them.  It is even better when I see them actually using the gift.  For that one moment, there’s a glimmer of hope that maybe they do love their stepmom and that I am more than just “my dad’s wife”.
