Name: Monica Stroter of Sugar Paperie www.sugarpaperie.etsy.com
Age: 29
Location: Baltimore, Maryland
Profession: Artist/Elementary Art Teacher and avid collector (i.e. “rescuer”) of lovely old things
Craft(s) of Choice: Embellished gift cards (or paper confections as I call them)
My passion for handcrafting small treasures began in the days of Highlights Magazine. With the arrival of a fresh new issue, I’d flip excitedly to the pages that revealed the DIY craft section. Humble objects like paper plates, popsicle sticks, spools of thread and empty film canisters (remember those?!) would be transformed into fantastical masks, doll house furniture, and other utilitarian objects for my young self.
Today I continue to find a new purpose for discarded yet lovely materials. My embellished gift cards (or paper confections as I call them) are made from collected materials such as new and vintage fabrics, ribbons and trims, papers, buttons, maps, books, and other adornments. Because my supplies are ever-changing, each card is of a limited edition. My designs show the play between color and pattern as well as how fresh and modern a handwritten well-wish can be.
My love for art has led me into teaching as well. As an elementary art teacher, I am inspired daily by my students’ innate creativity and storytelling abilities. I am inspired also by travel, birds, flea markets and “junk” shops, big cities, small towns, and music of all kinds. I love spring, tulips, stickers, and all things pretty. I am also quite fond of ice cream and laughing until my cheeks hurt. These are a few favorite things that inspire each little paper confection.
