The first time I realized how much crafting was in me and a part of ME was in Lome, Togo in West Africa. I was on a converted Italian cruise ship now repurposed as a hospital ship. I was one of a couple hundred volunteers ( my job on the ship was a hand-rail sanitizer and off the ship I was a puppeteer for the crowd control part of the medical visits to remote villages). At night, we would have time to relax on the ship and one night I heard that there was a group of people who met and worked on their knitting and crocheting projects. I was doing a cross-stitch Christmas stocking at the time and thought they would let me join even if I wasn’t a knitter. I can still remember sitting in that gathering of knitters and crocheters, women from ALL over the world, listening to them talk about life. It seemed such a homey thing to be able to experience, like something Laura Ingalls and her mom would do by the fireside. But here I was in sweltering heat, in a ship’s lounge on the Lido Deck of the Anastasis, in the harbor of Lome, Togo in West Africa. An odd fireside indeed.
