I am the mom of an Asperger’s Syndrome son, Brian. Having little or no resources for him in the little town of Shreve, OH (Where we lived at the time), I decided to look for alternative ways to help him. I came across an article from an another mom who described her son’s extreme anxiety and panic attacks. I totally related. She taught her son to knit to help alleviate it. So I decided I would too. But first I had to learn to knit. I sought out a friend and a LYS and learned the basics. I taught Brian to knit and he’s been knitting ever since. It DOES relieve his stress and mine. We make scarves for troops and Warm up America squares in between our own endeavors. Although I am still at a newbie level (most of what I have learned has had to be self-taught or taught through online tutorials and books), I am addicted. I have immersed myself in knitting! I love the sense of community. It is one of the only places that I am not shunned because I have a special needs child. I love the feeling I get when I have created something from nothing. It has boosted both my and my son’s self-esteem and been such a positive force in our lives.
