Name: Karen Hornsten
Age: 64
Location: Davis, California
Profession: Retired from being a teacher’s assistant for 14 year; now a grandma of 9.
Craft(s) of Choice: I am a crafter of ‘variety’, by that I mean I taught myself to knit when I was a teenager and knit many sweaters for my future husband. I learned to crochet from my mother in law and made booties and bonnets for my babies. I am an artist by ‘design’ and money, or lack thereof, dictacted that I make most of my Christmas gifts from the time I was a newly married lady. I have been making my own Christmas cards for well nigh on 38 years now. Every year my loved ones get a home made gift from me and birthdays bring the same. Now I design my own greeting cards with photos I have taken over the years. It is very important to me to incorporate a special quote in each of my greeting cards, picked just for the person I am sending it to. Recently I am lovingly into beading, designing bracelets with loved ones names, names of their children, or even favorite names of the person who will be getting the gift, like the word JOY for my daughter. I have discovered many exciting craft projects using beads, my latest being hanging round or heart shaped frames with my loved ones photos in them, along with a special saying or Bible verse filling another heart or oval further down the window hanging/frame. I follow no patterns, just pull the designs from my mind. Beading, I have found, brings me a lot of peace, especially if the creation is a gift for a loved one. I have countless ideas going in and out of my brain, all for a variety of crafts including water and oil painting, beading and jewelry making, card and stationary crafts or computer designed creations for framing, woodburning, which I recently have dabbled in, paper cutting and punching; you name it, I have longed to do it. The business end of things is still in my mind; my website didn’t bring much traffic but my next move would be to go to Bible/Christian stores to present some of my cards/stationary/framed work. What a love I have for the arts and crafts.
