Memory, Story or Anecdote related to crafting in your life: I remember being a little girl, and watching my Grammy crafting. Grammy seemed to do it all; knitting, crochet, sewing, she even had a kiln in her basement to do ceramics. I loved watching her work. She tried to teach me to crochet and knit when I was younger, but I just didn’t have the interest or patience to keep working at it. I was more interested in climbing trees. She continued to crochet and knit until she passed away, and my time to learn those arts from her was gone. So I put all of her aluminum knitting needles in my hope chest, with the intention of learning one day. In the fall of 2004 my husband and I discovered that we were pregnant, and I knew it was time. Knitting had re-emerged as a popular trend, so out came Grammy’s Boye Needlemaster, in it’s metallic vinyl case. I bought a “learn to knit” box kit from Wal-Mart, and set about attempting my first cast on. What a disaster. Luckily I discovered some valuable resources on line, Knitty Gritty on DIY, and went crazy. 4 years after that disastrous first cast-on I have made everything from scarves and hats, to bags and sweaters. I dabble in other crafts from time to time, but always come back to knitting. It’s comforting to have needles in my hand, soft fiber running through my fingers, the invisible connection to Grammy. And whenever he’s ready—I’ll pass it on to my son.
