I think my favorite memory dealing with crafting mostly involves my Grandmother teaching me to knit. However, there is always one memory that sticks out, and always fun to talk about with fellow knitters. My Grandmother lives 10 hours north from where I live, so when we would take family trips to see her, it was a long venture. At the time I had just recently re-picked up knitting again in high school and decided to knit up a multi-colored variegated scarf during the road trip. So I began knitting my perfect scarf during the lovely 10 hour car trip. After arriving at my Grandmother’s and settled in, my scarf was pretty much done (i.e. I was running out of yarn). So my Grandmother took her afternoon rest in her bedroom and would show me how to bind it off afterwards.

As she was resting, I sat in the living room constantly debating if my scarf should be narrower; as a result, I decided to rip it all out and start again with fewer stitches for a thinner scarf. Later my Grandmother comes out into the living room in complete and utter shock and (almost) scolds me in saying “Heather!? What did you do? Are you crazy? That scarf was perfect!” in response to the pile of yarn that was formally my scarf. Still to this day I love how ‘concerned’ she was for me and my knitting and how she reacted, for only 4 measly stitches too many.
