Casting On (long-tail method)

Calculate about an inch of yarn per stitch that you’ll be casting on; this will be your tail.

Letting your tail hang, tie a slip knot around one of your knitting needles.  You’ll now have two strands of yarn hanging down from your needle (the tail and the strand connected to the ball).

Place the needle in your right hand and with your thumb and pointer finger on your left hand; separate the two strands of yarn.

Secure both loose ends under your ring finger and pinky (if you pull the needle down towards your palm, you’ll see that loops have formed around both fingers).

Take your needle and scoop under outer strand of thumb loop and then over the inner strand of the pointer finger loop.

Let the loop fall off of your thumb and pull tail so that stitch fits loosely onto needle.

Repeat until desired number of stitches is cast on.
